With a little more time, it's best to plan a trip for a minimum of 2 days, with at least one overnight stay,so you can enjoy more of the attractions along the route and get more rest..

But even a 1-day tour to Saona Island is possible if you are determined and positive. You leave before dawn and return well after dark, but you can do it :)!

Dominican Republic - Saona Island

Colonial Santo Domingo

The capital of the Dominican Republic is about 3 hours drive from Puerto Plata. It's a chaotic metropolis of contrasts, where the oldest European buildings in the New World are juxtaposed with skyscrapers, and expensive hotels sit next to neighborhoods of poverty.

It's probably not a place where you'll want to move, but exploring it is very interesting and eye-opening to Dominican realities..

The old city tells the story of colonization more than 500 years ago and captivates with the architecture of its colonial buildings.

The majestic Columbus Monument may evoke conflicting emotions, while the cenotes of Los Tres Ojos will enchant you with the magic of forms, colors and tropical nature.

Finally, a cable car ride over the city, will complete the picture with scenes from the lives of ordinary people

It is worth it to get to know the capital!
